Beta Testing Begins

As of today, December 10th, beta testing on Tales of Phantasia PSX has officially begun. It’s been a while since our last update, so let me bring you up to speed on the newest stuff.

  • Script Translation and Editing – 100%
  • Skit Translation and Editing – 100%
  • New Features!
    • Selectable ability names (English vs. Romanized Japanese)
    • Splash screen and anti-eBay/P2P screen
    • Complete Patcher (made by Gemini specifically for this project)
      • Patches the game in 2-5 minutes depending on your system

So, there you have it. Most of this stuff has been done for several weeks. But there were internal alphas and some fixes to do, so nothing much that we could update people on. Why am I only posting two pictures? The truth is that I have TONS of them. But frankly, why would I want to tempt you with the game? I mean, before long, I’m just going to give it to you. ^_^

The two pictures here demonstrate the Ability Name Selector in action.

So let me just say, if you don’t yet own a copy of Tales of Phantasia PSX, now is a great time to look into buying one.

  1. As for the comment I posted a few days ago about having no material for an update, I lied. :P We’ve been gone undercover for a while, so please guys don’t be mad at us only because we didn’t post anything until now. ^_^

  2. Yeah, the truth is that we’ve been working hard all this time. But with the things we were working on, the screenshots wouldn’t have been that exciting, so we thought it would be more fun to keep our progress a surprise. But from here on in, you’ll be just as informed as anyone else, so we really thank you for bearing with us through our silence.

  3. Heh, looks good! Is the ability name selector an added feature in-game, or is it an option in the patcher?
    Probably an option in the patcher, huh. :P

  5. @vivify93: no, it’s not an option in the patcher. There is a selector which shows at boot and gives you the ability to switch between romanized, translated names and random (picks randomly between the first 2, it doesn’t really generate random stuff). At first I thought it as an option in the patcher, but it was actually easier to implement it directly into the game, and so here it is. :D It is also possible to switch nomenclature in game, but you need an action replay for that. I will try and find a way to add an option into the Customize menu, but I’m not sure if that’s easily doable.

    @Quik: Sorry, but we don’t need any more beta testers. We have already 5 people playing it right now, plus Through and I. As for the donations, I really dunno. xD

  7. Well, if you really want to make donations, buy me (or help me to buy) a Psp so that I won’t have to stress the hell out of Through every time I need him for some Popostation tests. xD

  8. Is the selectable ability names something that we will have to select each time we boot up the game, or will it just be once when you start a new game and then saved to the memory card?

  9. Oh wait… for some reason I wasn’t able to comprehend english when reading your previous response about the ability name selector, I understand now that you only have to select it once. This sounds great to me!

  10. Will this work with “The Best” (reprint) version of the game or do you need one of the original prints?

  11. @gukid – At current, the format for the selection is each time at boot. But it takes only a second. I myself was worried about the delay it might cause in the boot, but it’s not a problem at all. And as Gemini said, he’s working on a way to add it to the Customize Menu. If it’s possible to do, it’ll be done, but either way, it works flawlessly in its current form.

    @Raigan – It should work with any version of the game. There aren’t any differences between “The Best” and the original print that would cause it not to, so fear not.

    Man, all these donation offers. I’ll think about it, but I don’t know. ^_^;; I never expected to even have offers to be honest.

  12. Just wanted to say congratulations for getting this far with the translation effort. The screenshots look absolutely fantastic, the ability name selector feature is also quite nice.

    It’s weird… I’ve been patiently waiting on Cless to finish the ToP translation. You guys started this year i think? and you are in beta :D Awesome… truly awesome.

    I will eagerly play your translation when it is released, even though i feel somewhat guilty i suppose for taking up your translation. For the simple reason that yours is done faster( looks like it will be anyways ).

  14. This is truly amazing! All the work that has put into this project and with such speed is really something to behold. I can’t wait to behold a the final translation patch myself!
    To follow up on your response about the Romanized vs. translated names, if one starts and subsequently saves a game with Romanized names, can they resume and continue to play/save if restarted with English names? Will this have any adverse affect on save data?
    I also think putting up a donation link would be beneficial. I have long wanted to contribute in some way and would be glad to make a considerable monetary donation to show my appreciation. Maybe the donations could be used to buy PSPs or other ToP materials? Even if they’re used for settling your bar tabs I’d be just fine with that :)
    Again, outstanding work to all who have contributed–a huge THANK YOU for your dedication.

  15. As for the selector, it doesn’t influence at all your save data. You can change it only at boot, or using the following Action Replay/Game Shark code:
    8000FFF8 0000 (romanized names)
    8000FFF8 0001 (translated names)
    As I said before, I’m trying to add the option into the customize menu, so that it can be kept when saving data, but I’m not sure it can be done, or at least if that can be done easily. So, for now, the only possibility is to use the selector at boot or the AR code. :P

    As for the donations, yeah, that would be a nice idea. :D But this is through’s blog, so it’s up to him to decide what to do. I’ve got already a paypal account on my site, so if you really want to contribute, click on my nick and then search for “Donazioni”. :D It doesn’t matter on which paypal button you press, they are pretty much the same thing.

  16. On what emulator has this been tested? And which do you recommend we use?

  17. ePSXe works almost fine, but has some bad habits with XA sound (some samples just don’t play or they are cutted before the actual end). pSX works a lot better and seems to have no issues at all with the game, so it’s my recommended emulator for playing ToP on PC.

  18. Amazing ¡ truly amzink ¡ that´s is what I think about u guys, at the beginning I thought u dropped the project ´cuz the lack of updates but now I send u a Bravo ¡ in spanish , I have one question why namco don´t hire you to make new tales….
    Fuck¡¡¡ u are truly amazing not even translating the game u also made them game enjoyable, I have followed this project from the very beginning so now I am more than satisfied , and here there is a question , When did u finish the beta project? (I don´t want to make u guys in a rush)

Honestly i can’t believe this day is coming so soon, it’s been years as i’ve patiently watching cless’s project with the lack of updates and such, i didn’t want them to just die out like Dejap(god bless those souls) i figured i wouldn’t see another topic yet but was i wrong eh? i really wish i could donate because this is something i’ve been waiting for. For so long and i think a lot of other people feel the same way. If i can spare any money at all i’ll be one of those people donating. I really appreciate everything you two are doing. Great job guys well done. :D

    @DarkCless: Yeah, I’ve been waiting for a ToP translation more than you can imagine, and finally we have one. I’m happy that it turned out exactly as I wanted it to be (and in just 4 months :P ).

  26. When you release the patch, Will I need PPF o MAtic to patch it?

  27. The release day is yet to be announced (big secret there… well, not that big actually xD), and, as already stated in the news, the patch will be in a custom format (betas already use it). No PPF-o-Matic and similar things are involved, as they would use a lot of space, while the current patch is only 7.24MB uncompressed and about 2MB compressed in a rar package with the custom patcher included.

  30. They will not be included in the translation, but I will probably release a tool that can patch the game (original or translated) and replace all the sprite sheets using the ToP PSP Iso.

  41. Of course we’re gonna release it once the beta testing is done (which shouldn’t take long, unless we find out some serious bugs). I mean, it’s not like we need to lose time for some particular reason or event. :D Once it’s done, it’s done.

    But oh well is not that big of a mistake the translation seems to be well done keep up the good work :D .

  50. Dawg! You guys have WHOLE FREAKIN SWEDEN behind you, keep up the good work! I just posted about the PSP ver. on gametrailers, and I was like ” Hey, what happend to that translation project…” *Quickly, to google!* Found the forum, noticed that both you and Cless are still working, and just checked on who’s done the most. So, this might be an extremly retarded question, but how far have you guys gone? Think you can post it in %? Or, you can just skip it and say : Just wait.

    ANYHOW : Keep up the work, FOR GREAT JUSTICE.
