All right, I knew this would come up, but I was hoping I would have a little while longer before it did. There are, technically, “official” names for the characters in Tales of Innocence. They were created by Namdai Japan, so keep in mind that they do not represent the only possible translation. Names are works of interpretation. However, I am not doing this project for just myself, and as such, I want to ask for the input of those who will actually play the game. Therefore, I will be providing a short name list. I will include both Namco’s official names and what I would prefer. Anyone interested in helping to make this decision, please post a comment with your preferences below. Those in bold are the only ones that have changes or possible changes, so if you have an opinion on them, please comment below.

Ruca Milda (th413: Luca Milda)

Iria Amini (th413: Ilia Amini)

Spada Belforma

Ricardo Soldato

Hermana Larmo

Ange Serena

Asras (th413: Asura)

Inanna

Durandal

Orifiel

Himmel

Coda

Mathias

Thitose Cxarma (th413: Chitose Chalma [LAST NAME?])

Hasta Ekstermi (th413: Hasta Extermi)

Gardle

Sian Tenebro

Albert Grandeioza (th413: Albert Grandiosa)

Oswald fan Kuruela (th413: Oswald van Cruella)

Note that some of these were made up on the fly, so if you have a suggestion for a name other than what I posted, please feel free to comment.

Also, you can feel free to comment on the usage of Gel vs. Gummi, Magic Lens vs. Spectacles, and whatever else might be lingering in the back of your mind.

  1. I’d change Ruca Milda to Ruka Milder, Chitose Chalma to Chinozet Czarma and Hasta to Haze/Haste/Hasius or something like then the rest is all good. I would keep Gel instead of Gummi and Magic Lens instead of Spectacles, but this is just me, and thanks again for doing this project.

  2. Personally i’d change only “Gardle”, into something like “Garle” or “Gardel”. For the rest i think they are OK. Ah, i prefer Gummi over Gel however.

  3. They’re all ok, the only ones I would keep untranslated are Ruca and Iria =P I like them, ehehehe!

  4. Ruca should be left Ruca.
    Iria should be left Iria.
(I’m just used to Ruca and Iria from trailers and vids and websites…)
Lets not change the main characters name…

    Asura sounds “localized” 😀

Thitose Cxarma -> Chitose Charma??? or Kharma

Gardle -> prob Gardel or Gardal… Gardle looks more like a word than a name

  5. For me I think you should use the official names. At least for these 3 (I am used to them).

Ruca Milda Iria Animi Spada Belforma

As for Asras – yeah it should be Asura. For the rest characters I don’t mind them being changed or not.

  6. Use the official names… ^^”

    Gummi/Spectacles is better than Gel/Magic Lens… u.u

  7. well why not Ruca milda to lukas miller well i guess thats stupid lol

  8. Well, I’m used to Ruca and Iria. XD The others… I don’t know them but if they already had a “official” romanji name I think is better leave that version.

  9. I would keep Ruca and Iria. Ilia doesn’t sound that bad if you went that route, but Luca doesn’t seem right to me…I just can’t put my finger on why.

The other character name changes seemed fine to me. 😉

  10. As for the Gummi/Spectacles issue…if anything, at least keep Magic Lens. IIRC, wasn’t Spectacles used from the original ToP DeJap translation?

I prefer Gel > Gummi, but the ML vs. Spec. is a bigger issue to me.

  11. No, Spectacles come from the Japanese. That’s actually what the item is called. Like Gel, Magic Lens is a term they created for the US games. Thanks for all the input, it’s been helpful so far, I hope people will keep providing feedback.

  12. Please keep the original names. They just… sound wrong. So wrong.

    And yay for the translation!!

  13. Ilia should still be called Iria

  14. Another vote for the original names, and Gummi/Spectacles should remain the same =D

  15. I think Thitose Cxarma could be Chitose Kzarma, Asura is better than Asras and van Cruella is better than fan Kuruela

    I vote for Gummi/Spectacles

  16. I agree with all your name changes so far. Although, I also think Gardel > Gardle.

As for Ange, it’s kind of hard to tell how her name’s supposed to be pronounced in English, isn’t it? (Is it like “ang,” or “angel” without the “l”? Is the letter “A” pronounced like “ah,” or is it like in the word “angel” again? Is it supposed to have the French pronunciation?) Well it’s food for thought anyway.

Also…I slightly prefer the way “Gel” looks, and the same goes for “Magic Lens.” Whatever you decide doesn’t matter though, since I’m used to seeing both.

  17. Might as well post in the correct thread, as it were 😛

    My two cents…

    Names

Ruca: Kind of undecided… everyone is used to Ruca from the sound of it. But Luca does flow off the tongue better… I think.
Iria: Iria should definitely be Iria, as Ilia sounds like Ilya (guy’s name), while Iria actually is a girl’s name. I assume “Amini” is a typo, and you meant Animi.
Asras: Definitely not Asura. Asura isn’t spelled that way in Japanese, nor does it sound anything like that (in Sanskrit, the “su” is a long “su”). Whichever of Asras, Asla, Asra, Athla, etc. seems like it would work. Unless you just want to romanize the name without “translating” it, which I can’t recommend.
Thitose: Yeah, Chitose is way better (obviously). You could try Qarma/Qalma (Q pronounced like Ch) if you want exotic letters, I guess… that X is just nuts though.
    Hasta: Yep, Extermi better imo.
Albert: Might want to ask someone who’s Italian or something on the best spelling. Grandioza, or even the original spelling might be better, depending on what your contact says?
Oswald: Should be Oswald von Cruella? (von, not van?)

    Other

Gummi: I’d have to go with Gel. Or at the very least, Gummy. Gummi isn’t an actual word, it’s part of a brand name (Gummi Bears). This brand does not exist in ToI’s universe; it’d be like Luca finding Kleenexes. Further, Apple Gummis aren’t Apple Gummi Bears, they’re Apple Gel/Gummy candy medicine things, so it’s further inappropriate, imo. Gel is the most appropriate and is a noun to boot.
Jutsu/Waza: Sweet, Hometek continuity! I put together a list back when I was trying to get No$GBA debugger to Cybergoth this game… if you want it, I could send it to you. There were only a handful of new moves, plus a bunch of hi-ougis/Mystic Artes, for which I sort of made up names. I’m guessing you’d want to take a crack at it first though, more fun that way 😛
Spectacles: Magic Lens is again better here. I might be slightly biased, but I definitely think Hometek continuity is the way to go, unless something just grinds your gears *that* much that you can’t do it (see: Claus F. Lester) or it’s just a blatant screw-up on their part (see: Lightning Tiger Blade, maybe/maybe not Grave).

  18. Cxarma looks to be Esperanto using the x-convention to produce the “ch” sound. Esperanto also allows has an h-convention based on English which would actually write the “cx” as “ch”, so I imagine that would be fine. The actual letter in Esperanto is “ĉ”, but it’s a lot harder for English speakers to know how to pronounce that than “ch”.

The main post has also been edited to link this survey.

  20. Luca = Sounds too feminine for me but “Lucas” is a male name here in brazil.
    Iria = ok
Thitose Cxarma= could be Thetis (Thetys) Kharma

  21. I would keep Ruca and Iria unchanged,Iria it’s too cool and Luca…well,I simply don’t like it,just like may others ^^

  22. I would also change Gardle in Gardel.

  23. I’m just way too used to the original names, my vote goes for those.

    Chitose reminds me of Cheetos…

  24. My votes: Romanized/Ruca Milda/Iria Animi/Asras/Thitose Cxarma \o/

  25. I’d say Luca over Ruca… furthermore, Luca is a correct and very used Italian name, which comes from the same rooth of the word luce (lux in Latin, meaning Light).

As for Grandioza… well, it probably (99% 😛 ) derives from the adjective grandioso (grandiosa is the singular of the feminine gender). So I think Grandiosa is the right choice to pick.

  26. Hmmm, I prefer Ruca to Luca and the same with Iria (Ilia sounds a little weird …)
for Ange (variant name for angel …) i would prefer Angie (just looks better to me … and easier to pronounce)

    aside from that
    there all good

    KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

  27. Ah, yeah. Good point, Seph1311. Luca is probably the better choice then.

  28. Ruca: I’ve gotten so used to using “Ruca” and it seems like most of the fandom has too…it’ll be hard for me to make the change even with the Latin agreement. Plus, it’s mostly be trying to keep “Ruca” and “Luke” (Abyss and a more straightforward use of the root “Lux”) more different because their personalities are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Iria: It should stay Iria ^-^””
Asras: I personally like “Asras” and agree with Kaji’s statement…
Thitose Cxarma: Agree with your decision all the way. XD
Hasta Ekstermi: Also agreeing here with your choice
Albert: Eh…check with an italian just in case.
Oswald: Definitely works better in your choice

  29. Ruca: I’d keep it as ‘Ruca’, just because it’s a name that everyone has gotten used to. I personally think it sounds better, too. :’D
Iria: I’d go with Iria. I kind of think it sounds nicer xD;.
Asras: Ah, I’m on the fence. I like the sound of ‘Asura’, but I know that’s not how the Japanese say it. So, I guess I have to go for ‘Asras’
    Hasta: I’d go with Extermi.
Albert: I’d ask an Italian *shrug*.
Oswald: Definitely go with van (or von) Cruella

I’d keep Gummis and Spectacles as Gummis and Spectacles (That’s the way they were in the original Japanese, right? That’s how they were in Rebirth, at least. Haven’t played a Tales game in a while, so I’ve forgotten). No sense in changing them, unless you -really- like the sound of Gels and Magic Lenses. Gummis are actual products in Japan… sans the medical qualities, of course, so it’s not referring to ‘Gummi Bears’. Ah, I -had- some Peach Gummis, but…

  30. ^ Actually, what you said about “Asras” is false. That’s an invented spelling. The Japanese is both written and spoken as “Asura”. Asura is the more accurate of the two.

Also, Lemon Gummi are the best. That’s all I’ve got to say about that. ^_^

  31. Indeed it is, but I should reiterate that simply romanizing the katakana makes it sound like you are referencing Asuras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asura), which is very much a misplaced reference, both written and spoken. It lures the player into a false vocal (i.e. it’s not pronounced Ah-soo-ra) and symbolical (the name is likely not really referencing Asuras, at least not that directly) interpretation of the name. Also, simply romanizing his name in a game full of Western-ish names (well, other than Chitose) makes his name seem a bit out of place.

Pretty much anything else reasonable would be better than calling him Asura, imo.

  32. It *is* pronunced as Ah-soo-ra, and it’s also an actual reference to the Asuras. I don’t see why Asura shouldn’t be correct, also considering that it’s not the only non-Western name in there (ex: Inanna, another deity).

  33. i noticed how throughhim413 mentioned iria not sounding too well when spoken.

it actually depends on how you pronounce it.

if you pronounce it with an english accent, then certainly the R sounds horrible.
i’m dutch, so i pronounce the R a bit different, a bit closer to L actually, and it does sound good with an R like that. (i think it sounds slightly better with R than with L when spoken with a dutch accent)

  34. Japanese prounced R as L thats why sometimes when you watch anime if u heard the character Shout example LANMA!!! but the sub wrote Ranma japanese prounced R as L

  35. Ruca should be Ruca if you ask me. Luca sounds too… female-ish.
I like Iria more than Ilia. I find it easier to pronounce and it rolls off-the-tongue.
Asras I think is best. Asura sounds too… ‘epic’ or the like. Or maybe it’s just because of the Azura connotation of many games (Ragnarok Online comes to mind).
Chitose’s last name I like Charma, pronounced like charm-a, no funky tones. Chalma I end up saying ‘call’ and ‘ma’ as in mom. *Shrugs*
Hasta’s last name is fine as Ekstermi.
Albert’s last name I say Grandiosa, just because that’s technically correct, as opposed to Grandeioza (from a near-spanish POV).
Oswald Van Cruella reminds me of that woman from 101 Dalmatians, but is fine otherwise.
    Those are my two cents.

  36. Ruca should stay as Ruca, and Iria as Iria, for sure.

I’m pretty neutral on Asras/Asura. I like Asura a lil’ bit more since it sounds a bit more powerful.

Thitose I keep reading as Chitose, so I wouldn’t mind that as either, and I like Charma. :\ Chalma sounds fine, and I have no bloody clue about pronouncing Cxarma.

Everyone else I don’t care about. Maybe Hasta should keep his last name.

I would just keep the names as Namdai/Bamco writes it out, if possible. Try mixing it around for some interesting results?

  37. The translations you have sound great, but I think Ruca and Iria would be better because that’s how the American fanbase is currently spelling (for the most part). Everything, from manga scanlations to fansites have spelled them Ruca and Iria.

I’m actually a huge fan of keeping it at “gummi” XD Probably due to watching all the gummi shorts for the games. Magic Lens or spectacles both sound fine to me.

On a side note, I’m really happy with how hard you’re working to bring ToI to us >3<

  38. I’d go with keeping Ruca and Iria. Definitely go with Asura, though.

  39. Well, here’s my take on the names:

Ruca Milda – leave as is

Iria Amini – leave as is

Asras/Asura – Both are fine, Asras would be more true to the original.

Thitose Chamala – Chitose sounds too much like a certain snack that stains your hands orange… those kinds of things tend to bug me in games. Also, spelling the last name “Cxarma” seems awkward

Hasta Ekstermi – “Extremi” makes it look like the name belongs in a deodorant commercial or something using lame “extreeeme” advertizing.)

Albert Grandiosa – the spelling seems more natural than “Grandeioza)

Oswald van Kruella – Keep the van, as it sounds more classy than “fan”. The extra “u” in Kuruella is awkward when spoken out loud, and the last name looks better spelled with a “K” (with the added bonus of no longer looking like a reference to the villian from 101 Dalmations)

  40. Hey Absolute Zero, I would just like to give you my most sincerest gratitude to you guys for taking up this project!

I myself, personally prefer Ruca and Iria. Mostly because, all the others named “Luca” that I know of are female!

Luca from Ar tonelico II in particular, but there is also Lucca in Chrono Trigger. xD

Iria just looks better than Ilia, as a name IMO. I just realized/remembered that Ilia is a country in FE6 and FE7. xD

  41. For my opinion on the names, I say…

-Luca Milda, it just sounds better to me.
-Ilia Amini, Iria just doesn’t sound like a name to me. Ilia, however, sounds more natural.
-Anju Selena, because the pronounciation of Ange can be confusing, and the romanization of her name actually is Anju, so it just makes a bit more sense for it to be called that.
-Asura, because Asras sounds a bit silly to me.
-Hasta Extermi, because Extermi looks like “Exterminate”, and the “kst” in Ekstermi looks pretty ridiculous.

  42. I’m used to Ruca and Iria but I don’t mind Luca. Ilia does however =/

Asras or Asura, either one is fine with me.

For “Chitose Chalma”, well… as long you don’t keep the original name I don’t mind xD Chitose Charma/Karma seems better.

Some people seems to be uncomfortable with “Ange” pronunciation because it’s a French name. Angie bothers me a little because it sounds childish but I can get used to it with time. I like the “Selena” that somerandomperson suggests although it changes the meaning of her name. Selena is a derivation of the greek moon-goddess’ name Selene (a.k.a. Artemis) while Serena it’s a derivation of the word “Serenity”. If you choose “Angel” as her first name then keep “Serena” (too much “l” otherwise in my opinion). So now we have : Ange Serena, Angie Serena, Angie Selena or Angel Serena.

Ekstermi or Extermi? Hmm… Even though Extermi is appropriate, I rather Ekstermi. It makes it more exotic and change a little from the words’ derivation that we have as name @_@ Seriously, Soldato = Soldat, Larmo = Larme (Tear in French), Belforma = Belle Forme (Pretty Shape in French again)

I’ve got no problem with Grandiosa, but with a “z” would it make it looks better? Grandioza

“Oswald van Cruella” Reminds me a little of the 101 Dalmatians, but I accept it.

  43. I think you should just keep all the names the same.

  44. I much prefer Luca Milda, not just because it’s a lot easier to pronounce in English, but also because I think Luca suits his personality better then Ruca (Ruca sounds too rough, y’know?).
I also think Asura sounds a whole lot better then Asras (not only is Asras hard to say, but it just doesn’t *look* right at all). And I can’t decide between Ilia and Iria.. :\ (though I think I’m leaning more towards Ilia).

The only other ones would be Thitose Cxarma, Hasta Ekstermi and Gardle.. Personally I like the look of the ‘Th’ in Thitose, and for the last name Chalma or Charma works. Hasta Ekstermi looks good with the ‘ks’, and Gardle I think would work as Gardel.

And all the rest are perfect how you have them. 🙂

  45. In my opinion, the right transliteration for Asras is “Atlas” (or maybe “Athlas”, since japanese transforms the ‘th’ group in ‘s’), ’cause it’s completely different from “Asura”… then I’d like “Ruca Milda” as “Luca Milder”. All the other names are perfect, for me! ^^
Ah, thank you for this project! I’ll look forward to play this wonderful game in english! *w*

  46. I’m so happy about this translation *_*
Here some thoughts about the names (I’ve already voted):

Ruca Milda – Luca just reminds me of Chrono Trigger, but seems to be the right translation… don’t mind leaving as Ruca also.

Ilia Amini – Ilia is so much nicer than Iria…

Asras – I don’t feel confortable about the Asura name, Asras is more original, don’t you think?

Chitose Kharma – This is the best option I’ve heard about this strange name… Sound good also =)

Hasta Extermi – Good option, keep it

Albert Grandiosa – They asked about an italian guy and here I am, but Grandiosa sounds more spanish than italian. Then, the “s” will have the same sound as in “say”

Oswald van Cruella – “van” and “von” seem to be rather good options ^^

Keep up the good work! o/

  47. I’m fine with most of the name changes except Asras. I realize it’s too late for complaint now, but I’m used to Asura as anyone who’s played Xenosaga 3 would be…
