Innocent Names Round 2

By • July 19, 2008

First and foremost, I need everyone to make note of something very important. The person hacking this game is NOT Gemini (who I worked with on Tales of Phantasia). Gemini is currently busy with Persona 2.

Kingcom (or KC as I have referred to him in the past) is the one hacking for this project.

I know that a lot of people here are familiar with the work that Gemini and I did, so I’m glad that when people refer to “that group who did ToP” it’s usually in a good light. However, it drives me crazy to know how much work Kingcom is putting into hacking this game only to have Gemini get credit for it. Both of these guys are absolutely incredible hackers and they’re both very worthy of your praise and thanks, but let’s make an effort to give credit where credit is due. Thanks.

So, with a fair number of votes in, I’m ready to settle on some names. If you would still like to cast a vote, the poll is still available at http://zettaizero.questionform.com/public/Innocence1. So, these should be the final names barring some kind of strong objection or huge swing in the votes. Most people seemed to agree with my choice of Luca and Asura, but Ilia was strongly rejected, so we’ve gone back to Iria. Also, Chitose no longer has an X in her name, so that’s great.

Luca Milda

Iria Animi

Spada Belforma

Ricardo Soldato

Hermana Larmo

Ange Serena

Asura

Inanna

Durandal

Orifiel

Himmel

Coda

Mathias

Chitose Charma

Hasta Extermi

Gardel

Sian Tenebro

Albert Grandioza

Oswald von Cruella

Translation and hacking are both progressing nicely. We do have other screenshots to show, but we don’t want to burn you guys out on them, especially until naming conventions are sorted out. As always, feel free to leave comments. I’m sure I’ll be hearing from those in the minority who voted for “Ruca” whether I like it or not. ^_^

  1. Good, I like those names, keep up the good job.

  2. Oh! sorry KC, i just assumed (need to learn to stop doing that)
oh well about the luca thing (i’ll just clench while reading luca and hearing ruca)
    aside from that, YAY IRIA!!!!!
    keep up the good work!

  3. Well, if it makes you feel any better, you won’t be hearing Ruca unless that’s what you want to hear. What you’ll be hearing is ルカ, which is neither Luca or Ruca, the sound is somewhere in between. The fact is that his only REAL name is ルカ, anything else is simply an interpretation. If the goal was simply to match what you’re hearing up with what you’re reading, then I should just romanize the whole game. Surprisingly, I don’t hear a lot of people asking for that. My job is to make this game enjoyable and accessible in English. I (and the majority of the people reading this) judged that Luca is the better interpretation and the more accessible name.

I apologize if I seem irritable, I respect your preferences for the naming conventions. I would like to encourage that we don’t dress up opinion as fact, however.

  4. um … sorry?

  5. wait a second – what you hear is RUCA (Ru-kah) in-game voice, just like you hear IRIA instead of ILIA! i made a small comment and brushed it off as a joke and you had some fucking crazy piss fit! and YOU WERE THE ONE ASKING WHAT PEOPLE PREFERRED FOR THE NAMES!!! not fucking what should be in the script for the whole fucking game (cuase i blates want you to romanize it)
i said what i would have preferred in a comment and you fucking blow a fucking fuse
if your hearing something in between Loo-kah and Ru-Kah then you need to get your fucking hearing checked

  6. I’m not sure how my comment got you that riled up, but I assure you I didn’t blow any fuses. I don’t mean to be rude, but have you ever studied the Japanese language? The following link might be of interest to you if you have not, it explains a little bit about the R/L sound in Japanese.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhotacism#Japanese

What you are hearing is certainly a sound LIKE an R, but it is not a pure R. R and L are represented by the same character in Japanese. When spoken, it’s a blend of both, the character names in Tales of Innocence are no different. The romanization joke in my last comment was perhaps over the top, and for that I do apologize. I’m not looking for an argument or anything, I was simply trying to point out the misunderstanding you had about the R/L sound in the Japanese language. I’m sorry if I went to far and offended you somehow, as I said, I respect and thank you for your participation on the naming discussion.

  7. i knew the l/r thing, but – it sounds more like an r than a l – thats what my first comment was about – it sounds like ‘r’ i hear Ruca – I see ‘L’ it reads Luca – it’s not exactly a dream come true, but it didn’t really bother me to much ‘Oh well about the luca thing’ it was just a comment – your comment on the other hand was a sarcastic and degrading ‘joke’ and all i was reading was ‘Superiority complex – I’m better than you, your an idiot who doesn’t even know Japanese, why would i care about your opinion anyway’

just got me pissed off after reading it a second time – sorry i got so … rude in my last comment

  8. It’s all good, I should apologize too. I’m worn out and certainly could have chosen my words better. At the very least, I assure you that I’m not looking down on you or anyone else. I mean, if I were looking down on people for not knowing Japanese, it wouldn’t make much sense for me to translate games into English for those people, right? ^_^

  9. Looking good throughhim. When I first read about you announcing ToI I let out a shriek that scared my co-workers shitless 😉 I love the tales series and I think ToI and ToH on the DS look great and what I’ve read from (p)reviews they are!
Heh, so my first emotion was ‘Whoaaarrraaaaaaaa’ (it’s an emotion, sure it is). My second was, I need to pay this man or something…. so I did.

Thanks for doing this throughhim, I really appreciate your work on it and I really look forward playing it 🙂

  10. *Shigh* no Ruca…. but that’s ok, I won’t complain 🙂 I’ll get used to it, I have plenty of time before the patch will be released to get accustomed 😛 Being Italian, Luca is a bit too common as a name, here 😛 Maybe that’s why I don’t like it very much, I hear it too often 😀

  11. Ruca was better… 🙁

    😛

  12. Ruca Buright for Great Justice! Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  13. glenn…
you being italian, could you confirm for me whether most names are based on spanish or italian words?
if they are based on italian words, and luca is a common italian name, it would certainly be a good translation of the name.

  14. I think they’re Spanish, rather then Italian. Ricardo Soldato doesn’t sound Italian at all (in Italian it would be Riccardo). Soldato means soldier in both Italian AND Spanish as far as I know. Grandioza, once again, is Spanish IMO, since in Italian it would be Grandiosa. Serena and Spada Belforma are all Italian words, but I don’t know whether they bight be Spanish or not…
So, I think the game picks name from both Italian AND Spanish… So yeah, from that point of view Luca might be correct…

  15. Lol, I was wrong. Italian “Soldato” is Spanish “Soldado”… and Grandioza doesn’t exist in Spanish (Google says so…).
So, it looks like they are Italian after all… Riccardo Soldato and Alberto Grandiosa should be their names, then.

  16. The Grandiosa spelling is wrong for sure. The kana for that has not ‘s’ at all, and Grandioza is an actualy word anyway. If that was supposed to be italian it would have bene グランディオーサ instead of グランディオーザ. Must be a mixed name+surname, since Albert reads the French way in this case.

  17. cant wait to play this KC and Throughhim413. also cant wait for the other project anouncement.

  18. Aw… can’t say I’m too happy about the Asura thing. Or I guess, maybe they really were going for that? In which case it’s probably a good idea anyway, even if the pronunciation is off in the Japanese. Eh, perhaps I was being too narrow-minded. I’ll probably just annoy you again about it later if I somehow feel strongly against it 😛

Good to see Iria making a comeback, though 😛

  19. I do want you to know that I did consider your input on the matter, Kaji, so I hope you don’t think I ignored what you had to say. That being said, I have to believe that they were going for the reference. Like you, I’m a lot more used to seeing the name spelled out differently in kana, but I just went with it. More than anything, I suppose the poll was the biggest influence.

Asura beat the “official” version, Asras, in what was by far the largest margin of victory. Asras had only 68 votes to Asura’s 225 (at current). At worst, I figured that giving people what they wanted on at least one more name couldn’t hurt. I’m still open to discussing it, though I admit that your knowledge of the subject might easily surpass my own.

  20. i like asura better than asras because evry time i look at asras my mind say “ass rash”. but that just being stupid.

  21. I think I may have been too hard-headed in my suggestions anyway, plus it seems from the data like the overall best decision is to go with Asura, so that’s good. I was more against Ilia anyway, and the poll was with me on that one, so… yeah.

No love for Mateus? “I AM MATEUS, THE DARK EMPEROR! COWER BEFORE MY SCION-Y WRATH! Er, I mean, I’m Judge Mathis. Er, Mathias. Er… so, wanna grill some chicken breasts out back?”

  22. http://namco-ch.net/talesofinnocence/character/index.php

Actually, if you go to the official site of Tales of Innocence (link is up there), the english names by Namco Bandai has actually been posted. It would probably be best to stick to it, no matter how odd it is…

  23. I myself would actually prefer the official names.

  24. Ah, I was wondering. Did you come to a decision on Gummis/Gels and Spectacles/Magic Lenses?

  25. Yes, we’ll be announcing that in a few days.

  26. Luca is great name, keep that (my name is Luka, shh).

  27. Luca! Luca!, yep i prefer Luca too, ruka in Spanish sounds weird (i´m Mexican), so i prefer Luca, also this will be like a little personal touch to the translation due this name is not the same as the official ones.

  28. i´m new in this but i don´t the name coda it´s just don´t sound good to me but that´s my opinion i don´t know it´s like too crude

  29. Thank Atamoni that it’s back to Iria, but I still prefer Ruca. This may be because I spent hours upon hours into the late night working with the Tales of Innocence manga and grew way too used to using Ruca. Using anything otherwise would make my head spin. DX

Ah…I’ve come to terms at using “Asura” even though I still prefer “Asras”

    Everything else looks fine. ^_^””

  30. Luca Milda may be correct for the annunciation <. could just simply “Luke”.
Because the name phillips= fuririptsu <. Chrono —> Kurono Toriga O_O i’m not to sure about ‘Toriga’.

  31. oops.. O_O some of my comment isn’t shown T-T
    Like Chrono Trigger… crono—> chrono.

  32. Despite all of the minor differences that people may feel is “correct” over the other… what SHOULD matter the most is that they’re actually getting a wonderful translation of this beautiful game from somebody at no cost out of their own pockets! If the complainer’s aren’t happy with your choices, oh well… let them go to the trouble of translating the game themselves then. 😛 It’s YOUR translation and YOUR work and outside of sounding like I’m brown-nosing, I commend you for putting so much effort and work into making this for us dedicated (and deprived T_T) Tales fans! ^_^;
