Farewell for now, wireless

By • May 2, 2010

At this time, we believe that removing the wireless from the game is the best course of action.

I realize this may disappoint some of you, but the wireless is simply too broken to be enjoyable. Do understand that this decision is not yet 100% final. I am waiting for a second flashcart to arrive so that I can test the wireless more extensively. If there is anything that we can do to fix it, we will. However, for the time being, we feel that it is best to concentrate our efforts on the main game. While we understand that some of you wanted to make use of the wireless features, we cannot delay the release of the patch for a feature that has only niche interest. We feel that it is in everyone’s best interest to have the patch as soon as possible. If and when it becomes possible to fix the wireless, we will release an updated patch.

When I have completed my testing between two flashcarts, I can talk more about when the game breaks and why we think it breaks when using wireless mode. I apologize that I cannot provide more information at this time, but there are simply too many unknowns. We have ensured that the Versus style will be available in the single player mode, so don’t worry about that. In spite of what you might believe, removing the wireless will take less time and effort than either of the other two options. It is unfortunate that it had to come to this, but circumstances being what they are, we feel this decision is in the best interests of both the players and the team. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. Oh well, not like this is gonna’ effect the gameplay too badly… It won’t change how intelligent the CPs are either… If Iria or Angie are stupid with the healing spells it’ll show…

  2. pfft forget the wireless i want the game. this wasnt even post worthy but im sure somebody’s gonna bitch about it:/ keep up the great work u made the right choice.

  3. Dang, so far thats the one thing I was really not looking forward too. A couple friends and told me about this game being alot like Abyss. Loved it for multiplayer, well anyways getting back to my story. I was really looking forward to playing the multiplayer aspect only, hearing this is almost like a smack in the face with a wet fish. Although i can’t complain since this is all your effort and devotion, your not really even being payed. So I just felt like I would share my frustration of hearing this news.

  4. If it makes you feel any better, I can promise you that no one is more upset about this than I am.

  5. Oh well. As long as the story progression isn’t hindered by the lack of wireless.

  6. Aren’t there things that are only obtainable with wireless?

  7. Not any more.

  8. oh well… not having wireless is a bummer, but it’s not like I’ll ever find anyone with which to play this anyway…

  9. i still dont really understand why you think cutting it off makes any sense, i mean, its not like it will disappoint people LESS that way

  10. It’s really quite simple. As it is, wireless serves only as a source of frustration. People will either bitch now because we’re taking it out or they’ll bitch later when it breaks (no matter how many warnings are included). Either way, you can’t play the game wirelessly. Since we can’t fix it, we’re just saving people the aggravation of fighting with a broken extra.

  11. …and nothing of great value was lost. There are plenty of other games with good multiplayer out there for the DS.

  12. so if you release an updated patch can we patch the patch game?

  13. No, you’ll need to keep the original copy of the game to patch if we release a new version.

  14. Are you going to release the patch soon, or are you going to wait until you’ve done a little testing on the multiplayer?

  15. You rock ThroughHim, you too KingCom… All you guys rock…

  16. It doesn’t change how much I want to play this! ^^

  17. Can’t say the decision really surprises me, locking/removing it is a much easier solution then leaving a known bug in the game. Hopefully someday there will be a way to fix the issues but I won’t hold out for it. I think the bad thing is were more likely to see a ds emulator with wi-fi support and this bug fixed then we are to see any of the upcoming Tales titles released officially in the US :(

  18. There are no new bug reports in this post. I assume no new relevant ones appeared? Have the beta test results been satisfactory until now?

  19. Are you aware that DeSmuME has just gained wifi support? It’s only in source at the moment, not released builds, so for those not willing to compile (or else find someone else’s compile) it’s not present, but depending on how advanced it is–I’m not sure if it’s wifi and nifi or just one or the other–it might be useful for debugging purposes.

  20. Well since i’m using No$gba which i believe is the best emulator for the DS, I don’t think i’ll miss the wireless. Keep up the good work with the patch. ASEEEEEEE(in capoeira this is said to be the positive energy that moves all things in the universe)

  21. im not miss the wireless too, i dont have somebody to play :_: is better we see how play wireless mode than you guys trying to complete when is almost imposible
i support if the wireless die x.x

  22. People keep mentioning DeSmuME. It DOES NOT have the support we need. It supports the internet-based wireless connection. ToI uses ad hoc (the local area, hosted) wireless. Their release information explicitly states that ad hoc wireless is not supported.

  23. Um… thats sad.. but its good i guess if the added wifi bonus items are able to get without wifi support. One question though… why does it cause crashes during wifi? I mean Jump Ultimate Stars Eng Patch was perfect on local wifi… it even worked over the internet wifi with frends… (and it took that team not vary long to come up with a patch… giving its not a complete patch; it still patched 88.9% of the game.) So I guess my main question is; Why not keep the wifi? you could just make that section of the game connectivity have no eng patch. (If it fixes the crashes). Just a thought…..
I greatly applaud you all for the great time and hard work your putting into a public release, of a non-paid trans patch team. ^-^ I thank you all. I can’t wait to see the finished product.

  24. (local wifi, meaning ad-hoc)

  25. @Vague Rant: How did you change your post avatar pic… I can’t stand my blob of jelly sticking its tung out… lol Even though I love the color green…

  26. In order to make everything work as natural as possible, we added a lot of deep changes. There’s over 100kb new code (text), and over 800 changes to existing code. Some of that doesn’t seem to work well with the code the game uses in the multiplayer mode, which isn’t always the same as in the normal game. If we knew the cause of the problem, it would probably be possible to work around it. Heck, even knowing the call stack at the time of the crash might give us a good idea already.
The multiplayer mode uses the same data as the singleplayer mode, just different and more code in some places. Without the ability to debug it to trace the new code, it’s pretty unlikely to find a solution.

  27. makes u wish game link cables still existed huh? :P

    darn wifi and its complicatedness

  28. ah and if i were u id be pretty worried about using an emulator online would it not be easy to track your IP down through your connection in a game?

im pretty sure it would be easy to tell those connected through wifi and those connected through internet apart or maybe im just overthinking >_> who knows

  29. It’s your patch so I respect your decision, and I am assuming that the buggy-ness of the multiplayer mode must have been really bad if you decided that removing it would have been better. Are you going to tell us how to get Versus mode or do we need to figure it out ourselves?

  30. Everyone will be able to get the Versus style. Some sooner, some later, but nobody will be able to miss it. It would spoil all the fun to give it away just now!

  31. Wooooo, good job guys. A good choice indeed, don’t feel so bad about it. Its really no big deal, I’m sure you guys will figure out how to fix the wifi eventually. By then, those niche people will have reason to play through the game again, and thus your translation efforts will be acknowledge a lot more. On top of that you added in the versus style, so its really all good, i’m glad you made this choice and I really hope the beta testing is going a lot smoother now, and that we will hopefully see a good release in the near future. P.S.: How will Versus mode be obtained BTW? will it be acessible from the start, middle or end of the game? Well like don’t mention how to get it, just around what point in the game we should be expecting it. Thanks for all the good work.

  32. I love you guys, keep up the good work.:]

  33. I believe it was the best decision. I myself wasn’t sure whether use the wireless or not, and i really don’t think i’m gonna miss it, I also believe thath like 95% were’nt even gonna use it and just like to bitch about it ¬¬
Anyway, congratulations on you fantastic job, I’m sure it’ll be amazing, and reading your posts, i know that you’re quite the perfectionist, but don’t you get down, because of this, you’re project is fantastic and it amazes me that you’re doing that for us.
Please ignore the stupid people that doesnt see that.
Thanksfor all your effort and devotion! :D

  34. Well, i think that its not a great deal, i wouldnt even enter the wireless mode, so i dont care. Give me the story part and i will be the most happy person of the earth.
    Cheers

  35. i dont care about wireless im the only person in a 100 mile radius who even knows what a tales game is so no sweat
hows the beta testing coming along any othher snags

  36. Too bad, but very understandable.

How high do you estimate the chance that you might update the multiplayer in the future throughhim? (I know, no percentages, just ballpark “big chance/small chance).

I’m asking because I would probably wait for the update if there was a big chance (even if it took a lot of time), but I’m just going ahead and play it singleplayer if there is only a small chance.

In any case, aside from the multiplayer thingie some I think support is in order since you’re nearing the finish-line, so here goes:

YEEEEAAAAH Throughim! YEEEAAAH Zettaizero! Ganbarimasu yo!!!!!!!!

  37. a little question: if you delete the wireless mode how can we unlock the versus style?

  38. @chaosstar
Try reading the whole news post before asking questions. If that’s not what you’re asking then try reading all the other comments before adding your own.

  39. Not only you don’t give a summary on the beta test, you also ignore questions regarding it. You hiding major bugs to avoid panic or like the thriller?

  40. Ha, I was right. Removing wireless was the easiest course of action. I really don’t mind that its there, so I hope, Throughhim413, that you don’t concern yourself too much about it. I’m thankful enough that you are able to provide a presumably accurate english patch. I hope everyone else has empathy for your situation.
    Great job!

  41. In the previous update you said yourself these news wouldn’t mean anything to most players, so of course most would choose option 2, thinking about those that like multiplay, or option 3, because they go solo. Both bases don’t care enough about multi to push back the release, even the wireless mode fans want this patch as soon as possible. Either way, it’s was obvious from the beggining taking it out was the best solution for the project overall, nobody plays just to get frustrated by never making it to a save point. You should have just made this “Farewell for now, wireless” post in the first place stating why WM was being a nuisance to the project and made it clear you would make an update to the patch should the solution be found someday.

Either way, good thing it’s over, but all those +200 copies of each others comments should’ve been avoided.

  42. Lol, since I only care about the main story, it suits me just fine. ^^
The sooner you finish it, the better. =D

  43. Personally, thanks to me not paying much attention to a game that a year ago I had no desire to play thanks to the language barrier, I didn’t even know there WAS a wireless mode till now (I knew that hearts was supposed to have it in the exdungeon, but that never happened iirc.)

So this is no loss to me, and if anything that could have been unlocked through it can be gained otherwise, that’s all the better, as I probably wouldn’t have played with that mode if it WAS there.

  44. @Suomynona: I’m not really sure what you’re talking about. Less than a week ago I made the Beta Testing Blues post. In that post, I mentioned the beta finding some small bugs and small text issues. We’re fixing them. I’m not going to describe every tiny change we make. Excluding the issues with the wireless, there has been nothing worth going into detail about.

@Sara: I wasn’t sure I was ready to make that jump. Hearing from other people gave Kingcom and I some food for thought and brought us to the same conclusion that was apparently obvious to others from the outset. So to me, it wasn’t a waste of time to make the previous post.

  45. Oh well as I keep saying… You guys are doing the best you can with the code and tools available to you… I’d keep an eye on those DeSmuME guys though, if their stuff can access the internet through the DS’ wireless function then it may be a matter of time…

At any rate, my old man always said “Don’t sweat the small stuff… And it’s all small stuff…” What I think he meant by that is that no matter what you do in life you’re always gonna’ find little imperfections… Those little imperfections can build up on you if ya’ worry too much about them… So just let ‘em go…

  46. Oh well, not like this is gonna’ effect the gameplay too badly… It won’t change how intelligent the CPs are either… If Iria or Angie are stupid with the healing spells it’ll show…

    @BOB Uh they’re TRANSLATING a game not developing it…

  47. I believe their talking about how a human player is more intelligent than the cpu.

  48. damn that sucks. i wish that there was some way around it. oh well i guess it is what it is. no sense losing sleep over it. i personally really want it (i have a friend who was looking forward to play it with me) but if its impossible then its impossible. if anything just finish what you can with the game release it then finish the wireless section. it must really suck after releasing the whole page on the whole rushed fan translations but again most people want to play the game. considering they would have never gotten to otherwise i cant really complain. So do what you have to get it done then if some breakthrough happens latter fix it with the give tools.

  49. It’s not about rushing or not rushing. The capability to fix the game just doesn’t exist at this point. We could spend a year trying to fix it and still get nothing done. This is one of the limitations of not having access to real testing hardware. If all it took was time and desire, we would have got it done.

  50. my mistake. i didnt mean it like that. i meant it more in the sense that you really want to finish something but cant. it sucks but what are you gonna do thats life. may as well do what you can and hope for the best right :P hopefully one of those Emulators will come out with something that you guys can work with.

meh whatever just do what can be done. its not like you didnt spend time making this thing come this far. considering most people wouldn’t have even gotten the chance to play this. i think we will be fine.

anyways good luck with the project. i hope it goes well. just remember people will always complain about something stupid. no point in taking it in like its the worst thing in a world. just remember that lots more people will be thankful at the end of the day.
