Tales of Innocence is complete. An era has ended… at least in my mind.
And yet both Kingcom and I have still found ourselves compelled to work on Tales of Innocence to some degree… After you work on something for almost two years, it’s hard to quit cold turkey. So we’ve been poking at it, correcting little things that we’ve found, and documenting the typos and small glitches that some people have found as they played. I know this is shocking, but our v1.0 wasn’t perfect. Honestly, I don’t think anyone reasonably expected it to be perfect. It’s never going to be perfect. But people are still having fun with it and that’s good enough for us. I like reading comments from people. I enjoy seeing people playing the game in their own ways. I liked seeing the game skyrocket in the GameFAQs ranks and I liked all of the threads wondering what the heck was going on. They made me laugh. We really had fun watching people try to figure out how to obtain the Versus style. Honestly, I think both Kingcom and I were blown away by the positive reaction to this release. It really made all of the hard work worth it.
There will be an updated patch eventually, but it’s not our highest priority. It’s probably not going to happen right away. We want to take our time and make sure that we give people time to report the errors they find (if they are so inclined). If you want to help us improve the game, please submit bug reports and typos. And, of course, if you have questions about the game, the community here has been very willing to help.
In other news, Shawn over at Tales Union gathered up some of your questions from various forums around the net for an interview. It comes in three parts, so if you’re interested in seeing my answers to some of the answers to your questions, check it out here: Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
So… getting back to the matter at hand, Tales of Innocence is, for now, complete. So what’s in store for our heroes next week? Well, Kingcom and I have been enjoying some Team Fortress 2 for the first time in recent memory. Neither of us had a chance to play much during the beta testing, so we’re glad to be back in action. The Engineer Update just came out! What isn’t there to love about that!? Oh, you want to hear about more translations? Well, Kingcom has a few other projects to finish up, Super Robot Wars J and Oriental Blue are the first ones up on the list. I’m sure many of you are looking forward to seeing more of Kingcom’s excellent hacking, so those are certainly projects to look out for (if you weren’t already). As for me, my first priority is the Tales of Destiny: Director’s Cut translation that I’m working on with Phantasian Productions. I’m definitely looking forward to working on one of my favorite entries in the series again. Of course, Kingcom and I have been throwing around ideas for our next project for ages now, so that’s not to say that there aren’t other possibilities floating around out there. But those will be a story for another day.
Today is officially our project’s second birthday. I don’t know if that still counts since we’re done, but there’s never a bad time to celebrate. After a long race that we ran with everything we had, it’s awesome to look back at the finish line. It’s the best. I really do that the game was everything that you hoped it would be.
So….if you did make an updated patch…would it be compatible to simply patch a new version of the game and use the same save file used with the first patched version?
And I very much look forward to Tales of Destiny patch
Hell of an achievement! Congratulations!
And you linked to my thread (I say mine, I started it but only because I needed help, it’s other’s who are doing the helping)!
Once again, thank you for the two years of hard work.
And good luck to both of you with your projects (I particularly look forward to ToD:DC)!
That bit about yours and Kincom’s next project interests me…
@Crystal: A new patch would have to be applied to an original, unpatched rom just like the first patch. The save would still be compatible, however.
@FreudianLemur: Thanks for making that thread. Clearly it has been helpful to a lot of people. Thanks for sticking with us all this time. I hope you’ve found it worth the wait.
Part 3 of the interview is now posted at Tales Union: http://www.talesunion.com/news/tales-of-innocence-interview-with-absolute-zero-translations-part-3–1016.html
Once again congratulations for completing the project. I’m definitely looking forward to both your other projects. I’ve been holding off for a while now to replay TOD, in anticipation of the directors cut translation(i know i shouldn’t expect it any time soon, but i can’t help it). I definitely can’t wait for SRW J to be completed, now if only OGs and OGG would get translated (hint hint
).
well enjoy, watch as fans flood like crazy and a few hundred sigs of people supporting absolute zero. I for one am way to lazy to make one so i will most likely steal the first one i see (and i guarantee you they WILL exist…no matter what)
anyway have fun, and don’t try to start to many “new” things. just try to finish everything your working on at the moment. i know getting something done feels great, and thus having more time to focus on them will feel just as good.
finally WTG! if i was this at future shop id get it XD
I’ll thank you guys yet again for making the patch. I’m in the middle of playing Innocence and I love it more than when I tried to play it a while back (and I still loved it then)
Every so often, I do see a bit of distortion in coloring or a small graphic glitch (usually around the mountain around the fire area.) Garos?. I have yet to see any typos that I know of.
Ugh. As earnestly thankful as I am for your work on ToI and all other translation efforts, I can’t help but really disagree with the idea that translators should “step away” from the Japanese text. A translator isn’t a creator, just an adapter unit, applied to the Japanese to produce the English.
Again, thanks for ToI, and enjoy your break.
@Ex: To be an effective adapter unit, you have to “step away” from the Japanese text. Especially in a medium like a video game, you have to capture not only the meaning of the text, but the tone, style, emotions, humor, etc. etc. It’s not very fun to just provide a literal translation and have the reader go, “Oh, I guess I see why that line might have been funny to the original Japanese audience.” You want to make the reader find the translated line inherently funny, just as the original Japanese audience found the original Japanese line inherently funny. They didn’t have to go, “Oh, I guess I can see why the Japanese might find this funny,” and neither should you.
First let me say that the title of this blog made me think of growing up. (You lose innocence as you grow up … yeah) And I guess, it’s fitting; you have really grown as a translator, especially when compared to your Phantasia patch (not to say that it wasn’t good). AND this happens to be the second birthday of the project. :p
You guys did a really awesome job with Innocence. I’m taking my time playing it; 15 hours in and about to leave Garam. But that’s besides the point.
I’ve been following you guys since the beginning (albeit, over at TSF until recently) and I must say that to see this all come together in two years is quite an achievement. And now to have you move on to Destiny: DC … that’s exciting. That game blows my mind, and I’m excited even thinking about the MENU patch that you guys will release. Not to mention the eventual complete translation. I want to play the game again. :p
And you and Kingcom’s next project … Tempest?? -shot- Kidding, but not. I’d understand if you didn’t want to work on that game due to A) the little love it gets and B)it’s subpar quality. And it’s a bit early to be pestering you guys with requests anyway.
Basically, enjoy your break, and I’ll be back cheering from the sidelines when you start again on Destiny: DC.
And happy birthday Innocence project!
I Would love tho repeat my greetings guys, you two are phenomenal!
You did a fantastic work better than the first that was already awesome!
I’ll look forward for your next project (TOD DC)! GOOD WORK and GOOD LUCK guys
50 hours of gameplay and I still enjoy it ^_^
I wonder if a next collaboration between the two would be a not-tales game. Maybe Princess Crown? Man, that would be awesome.
And echoing more or less everyone’s praise, well, the patch is awesome. 50 hours in, love the translation choices and, as TV Tropes would say, “Woolseyisms”. Also couldn’t find any typo, or glitches… anyway. You guys, believe it or not, created one of the best fan translations out there; and at least the highest-quality Nintendo DS fan-translation yet. You guys have no idea on how awesome you are.
@Flamfas – Aaaarrghhh, Tempest! NO! No no no no no *bad memories* no no no no… no. No. No no no. No. No. No.
The English-speaking community is better off without that… that… entity.
well after Tales of Destiny DC would be good the translation of Tempest so all the three for DS will be translated, another fantastic project would be Tales of Rebirth! one of the best Tales of imo….
I am still enjoying this game, 11 days after release
Thank you very much throughhim413, Kingcom and the rest of the AZT team! I can’t wait for ToD: Director’s Cut! My brother is still jealous of me that I get to play a game he has never played lol, he wants a DS now
YAY! Finally, Director’s Cut!
A new project? I say you continue translating Tales Of games … Tempest is horrible … I think Rebirth is the only viable choice.
I’ve just finished the game today. Your work is unvelieable, awesome, impressive… I just can’t believe that you both worked that much for free and for all! Thanks a lot!! Thank you thank you thank youuu! Best wishes from Argentina
I just finished the game! it was awesome, 3rd favorite tales game for me. Thank you so much for translating this wonderful game!
Good luck in your future endeavors!
@Flamfas Tempest would be nice but the game is too crappy and short. I say go join Kaji and help him finish Tales of world: ND2 and ND3; been waiting very long for him to finish it T_T. Or he can help with Hearts aswell. If you want to really start a new tales I say Tales of Graces ^_^
Once again thank you for completing this project. You guys brought us a Tales game that would have NEVER been playable for most of US, specially with Namco Bandai’s (twisted) business practices.
Of course I’m eagerly awaiting ToD DC. Although I’m a little worried on how well the collaboration with Phantasian Productions will go, I sincerely wish you the best on that project.
Lol. Yeaaahhhh, getting Versus style is uh….confusing. XD How is it that it seems to happen under different circumstances? Like, Luca got his the first time I stayed in Tenos. I’m baffled. WHHHYYYY?! …..Well, suppose it’ll be fun trying to figure out. XD
Congratz on your 2 yaer innocence anniversary!!!!!!!!
Come on guys, Tempest isn’t THAT bad. It gets hate because it’s not up to par with the series in general, but looking at it objectively, rather than subjectively, it’s actually a pretty good game.
And, the only mothership titles that don’t have translation patches underway are … none. Well, Vesperia PS3. But no one can hack PS3 yet, and someone’s making a script. This is why I’m suggesting Tempest. I’d suggest that, or Phantasia: NDX if it’s not localized by the time the Destiny: DC project is done.
@Flamfas: What about Graces? I don’t think that’s been confirmed yet. Nor does it have any projects. But I guess they still have plenty of time to announce a US/EU release.
REBIRTH REBIRTH REBIRTH
@FreudianLemur there is already a Graces patch in the works
http://tales.namco.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=84338
damn … you guys should change the name of the team to AbsoluteHero, seriously!
… *crickets chirping*
I SAY REBIRTH PSP!
Rebirth ps2 would be better , because there are more players with a ps2 than a psp
@Flamfas: Sorry, my mistake.
@30084pm: Thanks for the link.
So, just for curiosity sake… Now that you can take your time about it, what do you think about debugging Wi-Fi for ToI?
You wrote earlier, that no emulator is Wi-Fi compatible now, so you can’t even guess where bugs are starting but… isn’t it possible to debug it from the DS itself?
Guess it’s a silly question, cause if it was possible You would certainly try it…
It’s not that simple, unfortunately. I have tested the game between two flashcarts and attempted to learn anything I could about the problem, but I wasn’t even able to guess at the cause. The game would crash in different places during the course of dialogue with no warning. Even if we could isolate the cause of the problem, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we could fix it without the debugger provided by emulation. Believe me, if more time was all that it took to solve the problem, I would be working on it night and day. But for now, all we can do is wait and hope that emulators advance.
Congratulations!
It is, indeed, an awesome work.
Thank you so much, again.
And please, keep up the good work, because we all love your translations
I too loved the “Why is this game so popular now??” threads…. Anyway I just want to thanke you all again for you great work on the translation and good luck on your future projects!! (>^~^)>
Um Sick thx for ToI Greatness! ToD next WOW thats gonna be rawrsome GL, was wondering about Tales of Hearts 2…no specific version btw..my buddy wants a cheat database for the patched version, do i just copy and paste the cheat database from the clean version or whut. cuz i couldnt manage to get it to work on my own. Just curious is all. THX For everything though *Thumbs Up!*
@Freudian Lemur: Nah, no problem. The Graces projects are rather under the radar.
@30084pm: You’re half right. The link you posted is only to a menu patch. The full patch is here: (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/959197-tales-of-graces/52694584?page=25). And supposedly there’s another team working on a full patch too. And there are YouTube translation videos like eclisis did for Rebirth. (http://www.youtube.com/user/KurusuTatari#p/c/450F7628A30C2B6A/0/aUbnUU_rEMU)
@Sampras87: Actually, there’s a group using eclisis/lanyn’s translation and creating a PSP AND PS2 patch. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOatZVk0_NU)
My sincerest congratulations and heartfelt thanks.
You’ve done a great work for fans like me.
Really, thank you.
congratulations for completing the project.
sorry for late because i have problem connection, peace.
and I am very touched to see the text conversation that has become English.
because i bad at speaking, i will skip anything to say thank you so great!!! haha
on my second playthrough
, what happens when you complete the awakening rate???
)
Thanks again for the patch!
I hope we can see more Tales games translated like Tales of the Tempest
WOAH! WOAH! WOAH! Did somebody say Super f’in Robot Wars?! I LOVE ToI don’t get me wrong, I still haven’t finished it but man am I having a HUGE blast playing it (VERSUS style is the best idea evar), but dude, SRW is SRW, gotta have it. Side note, but as far as ToI goes, despite what some people may be bitchin at, I support the “mess up”/Removal of the ‘grade glitch’. But back to the even more important issue, Super Robot Wars. Are you telling me you guys are working on an SRW project? Granted J isn’t exactly the best SRW ever but it’s a decent one and dude. SRW game. In English. That isn’t OG. I’m sold, instantly. All I ask is, “where can I find updates and info on the progress on SRW J?”. Because seriously, I’m interested. Very, very, -VERY-, interested.
That would be wonderful to have an English copy of Tales of Graces…

On-topic: Before anything else, many congratulations and thanks for the job well done to all the ones who made this possible. Looking forward to the next projects as well. I’ll be sure to donate to you once I have the chance, to truly thank you for everything (it’ll be a while before I can actually do it, though, so if it takes too long please don’t think I’m BSing you). Anyway, one idea would be thinking about joining other translation groups with their Tales works (like you did with Cless) so we’ll see some good progress on already-existing projects. KAJITANI-EIZAN ( http://blade2187.110mb.com/projects/ ) has projects for ND2, ND3 and Hearts, and there’s a person called StorMyu22 on YouTube translating Rebirth ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOatZVk0_NU ). So it’s your decision. Whatever you choose is fine by me. Thanks again.
Hey Throughhim, are you planning, once you go back to tales of destiny translation, to update how things are going for this game (Tales of Destiny), in this page as well?
Yeah, when we start making progress worth noting, I’ll mention it in updates here.
Great, thanks!, ill be looking forward to it then
!, and im freaking loving tales of innocence xD
I would like to take this chance to really congratulate and thank you guyz for the superb, nay. Perfect translation patch. No words can express my feeling when I looked at this patch and played the game.
THANK YOU!
tales of rebirth or tales of destiny 2
ToD:DC? That would be great. I love the game because it was basically my first encounter with the Tales series. IMHO, the story was excellent, though not as good as ToP. I’m not getting my hopes too high, but know that I’m very happy that you decided to take ToD:DC for your next translation project. Have a good rest and a happy life, throughhim. You are a good man.
Thank you very much for the translation. I completed the game in 28 hours and 45 minutes and i loved it!!! Your are good men!!!
P.D. I am waiting for another translations!!!
Translate Tales of Hearts or Tales of Tempest, please!! :’( Both games are excellent, but I know that it’ll be a huge work, too.
By the way, I’m enjoying your Tales of Innocence translation, it’s wonderful!! Thank you very much ♥
Greetings from Spain.
2 throughhim413
I wonder, is it hard enough for your team after such perfect work on Innocence to try and make translation on Tales of Tempest? ‘Cuz, as I know, nobody did translation on this game, only guides etc.
