Tales of the Tempest v1.0 Patch Released

By • April 1, 2013

Can you believe how long it’s been since our last release? Time really flies. It was difficult to decide what to do next after we finished Tales of Innocence. What game could possibly be deserving of our impressive localization experience and technical know-how? Thankfully, you, the players, were there to answer – Tales of the Tempest.

Sure, working on Tempest meant delaying Tales of Destiny a bit, but I think, in the end, we can all agree it was worth it. The passion of Tales of the Tempest’s fans made it clear that to do anything else would bring dishonor upon the Absolute Zero name: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] These fans made it clear that Tempest was an overlooked gem, and I was inspired to join its evangelists in spreading the Gospel of the Tempest throughout the fandom. So profound was Tempest’s impact that it inspired the series’ creators to create a system to set it apart from its peers. And so it came to be that Tales of the Tempest was named the first Escort Title.

We here at Absolute Zero knew that the anticipation for Tales of the Tempest’s patch would be unbearable, so we made the difficult decision to carry on the project in secret. For over two years, we labored in secret with a single goal in mind – to do justice to a game that had been so wrongfully judged by so many.

And at last the time for redemption has come. Fire up those flashcarts and engage those emulators as Absolute Zero proudly presents an experience you won’t soon forget – Tales of the Tempest.

Please do read the README since it includes the patching instructions. As with Innocence, the patch is in the xdelta format. For Windows (or Linux via Wine), you can use the KaioShin’s xdelta UI (change the filetype to ALL when selecting the patch) and for Mac OSX you can use Sappharad’s MultiPatch. The command line will also work for those familiar with it.

This fan translation is provided for free by Absolute Zero Translations.

  1. Tkanks for your hard work!!!

  2. Completely unexpected. Awesome! Thanks for the hard work!

It was obvious that this game was rushed. It had so much potential to become something big. First and foremost the worldmap. I think Tempest is the first Tales where you can’t travel around the world. It wouldn’t surprise me if they originally planned to let the player go to other continents. This is indicated in the end of the game where Caius begins a journey to other continents. Also Tilkis brought up his country multiple times and yet we haven’t seen a singly square meter of it.

King Aurella is just stupid. He is revealed very late in the game. The firt time you see him, you fight him in the last battle, wtf?
Remember when he opens the gate to his spot world? In all other Tales games, this would be a turning point. The player thinks that this was it, the game is finished and then it is releaved that it’s far from the end. In fact, it just getting started. But no, in Tales of Tempest the game indeed ends at that point. I assume the original plan was that King Aurella would succeed in invoking the law of life and let the spots invade the human world, beat the group, let Lakius save them and escape, and thus beginning a new journey (with Lakius in the group) of getting rid the world from the spots. During this journey the player would travel to other continents, gain strenght and finally beat King Aurella (possibly in his own spot world).

Of course this is just speculation. But I really do hope that they won’t just remake Tales of the Tempest R, but extending it, making it worth to be called a Tales games.

  4. Edit: Oh I forgot something: Just who the hell is King Aurella in the first place? Is he a human boy controlled by a spot? If he is, then how did he come to the human world? The law of life has not been invoked before, or has it? And obviously for a century the people had no problem in having a child king.

  5. @zip

I have two ideas how tempest R will continue the story. 1 is that they will have you explore the other world and meet the 1-3 new triverse characters. 2 is that they follow the originals plot and then do a timeskip after its over. Either way they have to expand the main part a LOT if they want to make it good.

  6. Well it seems that Tempest R won’t happen because it was an april fool joke by abyssalchronicles >.>

  7. This game is so bad. I’m almost an hour in, and I can’t see it getting much better, not with how completely unpolished everything is. It’s not the worst thing I’ve played, but it is appalling how consistently the game seems to lack quality.

Ah well, I’m all about Tales series games in English, for better or for worse! It’s a shame this one leans way over towards the worse.

  8. So, i was wondering; now that tales of heart R will get and oficial localization, will you drop tales of hearts DS?
Also what do you think about keroro tales of?
    see ya.

  9. Hearts? How can I drop someone else’s project?

Also, Keroro isn’t a Tales game, so I have no interest in it whatsoever.

  10. @Absalon: I can’t find any information about a localization of Hearts R…

  11. Okay I’ve tried everything and I can’t patch the game. I’ve read the README file and no matter what I do I can’t figure it out. When I go to xdelta it tells me to open three things: patch, source file and output file. I have no idea what to do here. I put the patch in and the rom file in the source file part and have no idea what to put in the output file part. Please help. I would really like to play the game even though I know it’s bad

  12. I read it here that is under consideration:

One of the main reasons is, unfortunately the PlayStation Vita is doing relatively poorly in North America
so it’s one of those things that if the numbers increased considerably, then it’s something we could consider.”

    and understand the following:
if the vita sells, one of the R games will come over here.
since the vita is not selling, and apparently that won’t change; i would assume, none of the tales game will come over here.

  13. @Absalon: That’s not good enough. A consideration doesn’t mean it will be localized. I believe that most japanese games were considered for a localization at some point.

  14. Hello everyone !

I have a little tiiiiny problem about a side quest in he game (and I don’t really know where else I could ask it…) : did you find the soldier of Northgate lost in Borgham Forest ? I searches him for so many hours than the game is really long, actually… ;P

  15. @Bubble: Nope, I didn’t find him either. I didn’t put much effort into finding him, though. The game does its best to discourage you from doing sidequests.

  16. Just to clarify, you won’t find a npc, you just have to be in the exact x,y coordinates of this map to trigger the zelan sidequest.

  17. sorry forgot to say that the zelan sidequest is the star with the number 2, and one last thing every quest in this game is finish-able, even the bestiary, (the last boss is not count for completition)
I was able to finish all the sub events thanks to two japanese wiki, since the american one is absolute crap, and it’s been years since the last update, seems that they will never update a thing.

If any of you use firefox, install the plugin “translate this” right click and everything is in “engrish”

    take care people!.

  18. Wow. after being able to play Tales of Innocence, which I played twice thank you so much, I am surprised to see this translation available. So I read the read me and am scared to play it now haha. I guess I will have to weigh in the pros and cons, but it is going cheap enough online at least….
Thank you for your work on both this and Innocence. Your efforts are appreciated.

  19. hey thanks again. I was wondering if you would be willing to post a link for the people who can’t figure out Xdelta. I know, I know, but it took me 40 minutes to figure out and I stumbled upon the correct procedure. Unfortunately this world is filled with impatient people who won’t even try to wait 5 minutes to figure it out. internet searches pull up random jargon on the subject and as a result you find a ton of pre-patched roms floating around. I’m only pointing out what I saw and I feel bad because you guys put a lot of work into this and have very few requests in return. The pre-patched roms floating around are one of them, so I thought I would just throw that out there. Again thank you for the hard work you all did.

  20. just use xdelta GUI from Romhacking.net it’s quite simple to use you shouldn’t have any problems.

  21. I’m just curious, does the patched game work on acekard 2i? I tried it on mine and its only white screen

  22. Thank you for translating the game! I just finished playing it (even the Leimorne Depths). It wasn’t terrible, just bad. I thought the developers of the game tested the capabilities of the DS console and its possibilities in creating a Tales game in it. I’m just glad I tried playing it, and its all because of your hard work that I was able to.
