Current and Future Happenings

By • February 16, 2015

A lot of different stuff is going on these days, so let’s talk about what’s going on with all the projects for those not following the git feed.

Tales of Destiny DC was my main focus until two days ago. We’ve made great strides. The menu is pretty close to completion, although I guess I’ve said that several times now. What’s still left for the menu are the enemy descriptions and the story synopsis. Both of them are pretty sizable and pretty dense, so I’ve just been doing them bit by bit along the way. I’m about a third of the way through the enemy descriptions and I’ve done nine chapters’ worth of synopsis. The battle audio subtitles are coming along, but there are a lot of them. In total, Destiny DC has over 10,000 voice clips. Not all of these are battle audio, but I have to dig through them to determine which are and which aren’t to some degree. I’ve currently translated around 1,300 audio clips. The story translation isn’t very far along yet, just a couple chapters in. Despite all of the progress, the project is wearing on me a bit, so after talking to Kingcom, we decided to make a push on ToPX for a little while. That’s not to say that there will be no Destiny progress in the mean time, just that it’s not going to be the main focus for the next few months.

Tales of Phantasia X is what I’m currently focusing on. I know a lot of people wonder why we’re even bothering with this project, especially retranslating everything rather than using Absolute Zero or Phantasian Productions’ existing translations. The answer to both is just that I love this game. Working on Phantasia is fun for me. ToPX is a chance for me to finally create the definitive localization I’ve always dreamed of (unless Bamco goes and creates an enhanced port for the Vita or something). The best way to do this is to retranslate the game first, then use the previous translations to help refine the text further. The other part of the localization is adding features like the synopsis, skit titles, and location names. I hope that even for those that have played Phantasia before, this will be something to celebrate and enjoy when it’s done. Anyway, I just recently finished retranslating everything in the present timeline. Our goal is to try and knock out Tales of Phantasia X first since it’s the shortest of the projects. And speaking of project length…

Narikiri Dungeon X is still a long way from completion. This game is deceptively huge and it just hasn’t been our focus. Like with all of our projects, you can count on it being completed eventually, barring any unforeseen events like official localizations, but it’s definitely going to be the last of the three projects released. We’re aware we haven’t really put out any substantial previews for this project yet. Hopefully we’ll have something to show off from it soon. It’s on our to do list, it just hasn’t been a priority up to now.

And in other news, I’m planning on attending Aselia Con next month in Texas. Cons aren’t usually my scene, but this one sounded like fun. I’m going to be putting on a panel on Sunday March 22nd talking about the history of Tales series fan translation and giving an inside look at how Absolute Zero works. I’ll probably throw in some new videos of our current projects as well. If you’re going to be at the con, please stop by. And if not, well, I’ll probably end up putting it online in some form or another.

  1. Thanks for the update! Awesome job you guys are doing here, Tales of Phantasia the best tales of!

  2. i want ToD DC but ToPX is good too. ToPX version is the best ToP.PSX ToP doesnt work with my psp go so i really want topx translated. Also like you said itll be outta the way when its done so then you can focus on the best rpg ever made lol

  3. hell ya <3 tales of phantasia x.awesome since i played through it already in jap, but getting it dubbed would be even better ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. It’s great that you put the effort in translating the battle quotes and put a subtitle there, not even official localizations care to do this, one of the main reason why i will never play
tales of the abyss undub or dub; it’s because in the undub’s they didn’t put any sub to the battle quotes, and the dub don’t have any audio for skits.
Hope you recover your interest in completing tales of destiny, quite frankly is the only game i’m interested in play of the ones you are working on.
    Take care!

  5. Thanks for the update. Glad you noticed the burnout before it was too late. Looking forward to playing Tales of Phantasia X and keep up the good work.

  6. I’m so happy you are still working on these translation projects ! You did a great work with Innocence. Thank you for your hard work. I really want to play Tales of Destiny DC one day, and thanks to you, maybe it will be possible. Thank you very much !

  7. I’m anxiously waiting for TOPX, throughhim! So get your buttocks working on it!!

Lol jk, hope you’re able to finish asap and kudos / congrats to you for doing this for us other fans!

  8. I’m so happy about this update. I mean I really want ToDR, but ToP is my thing! I just love anything Phantasia and again, I really want to thank you for your work. You give us Tales fans shining bright hope in playing Tales games that have missed the port to the US.

  9. So great to see where your at. I’m so looking forward to your ToPX translation. I loved being able to play Tales of Innocence. Thank you.

  10. Thank you very much for the update. I’m really looking forward to these games, but especially Tales of Phantasia X and Narikiri Dungeon X.

  11. I know your stance on it but damn I wish you didn’t have to translate the synopsis and beastiary (or add them later).

  12. Sad that Narikiri Dungeon X is supposed to be the last since it is the one that I most care about, but anyway, thanks for the update!

  13. I feel the same way as @rogerio does but I will wait as long as I have to, still have a bunch of stuff to keep me busy and I’m enjoying tales of tempest not sure why that game got so much hate even from u guys lol its great so far innocence will be after and still crossing my fingers for that tales of hearts ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Awesome news! The way you’re working on those projects seems pretty… professional to me.
I’m really looking forward to playing ToDR, but I’m much more looking forward to playing ToPX, so great news for me!
Playing the PS1 version atm on my PSP on TV, great experience but I can’t wait to play the even more improved version in English!
The battles not pausing anymore during big spells/summons is amazing. It looks like ToPX got kind of the same battle system as Eternia, is that right? Going to play ToE next.

Also happy with the fact that PSP games are widescreen.. it will look great on TV or PPSSPP. Keep up the amazing work!

  15. I’m not really interested in Phantasia X as I have already completed Phantasia with your patch (really liked the game and the translation btw).

What I’m really looking forward right now is Destiny DC and Rebirth, but I know these things take time so I’ll be patient.

Playing Tales of Hearts right now on the PS Vita makes me see how important it is to have a good translation; you guys did such a better job with Phantasia than they did with Hearts its almost laughable. Have you ever thought of offering to translate games for Namco? If they paid well enough it would be a win/win for the community and for them.

I really appreciate the job you guys are doing and look forward to your next announcements. Thanks!

  16. Welp my premium box finally arrived so now to find a copy of NDX… This will probably be a lot easier.

  17. I’m really looking forward to both tales of phantasia X and narakiri dungeon X… thanks a lot.

  18. Can we play normal ps2 version with this? The director’s cut version is expensive!

  19. @sonya: Unfortunately, we are only working on the Director’s Cut version of the game. This patch will not work with the non-DC version.

  20. Hello…

I’m new to this chat box. And I am a BIG…Tales Series fan.

I’m hoping to witness the complete translation of the works you guys are putting in. Games like Phantasia X & Destiny DC…they all look great to see when one’s playing them, but it’s so darn hard to understand what they say half the time unless you got a translating book?

Heck, I feel that if you can make this stuff happen, maybe those that wanna share the view like Walkthroughs & Playthroughs on Youtube could credit you guys.

Heck, there was even a guy on Youtube that translated Tales Of Rebirth & put separate categories of Artes, Boss Fights, to just story scenes. It was something, he translated that game that never gone sent to America or translated.

Probably the biggest work many are patient to see translated, is Tales of Vesperia on the PS3. Some youtube guys are slowly, but surely getting them through as much as they can. Even for different choice scenes.

So, I’m hoping you guys make good progress, & then we can either play the games we like or post them on youtube & other related sites to be shared.

Oh, & one more thing…there maybe some hope for Innocence R to reach America & be translated if the sells for Hearts R are well. Even more news, there maybe a plan to create a Tales Of The Tempest R, now that really be interesting to see? Till then, I’ll wish you guys luck in doing your best, do hope you can give us some update of how fair close the translating is coming, but…you do that when you feel up to it.

  21. Sigh. I knew all this progress with ToD DC was too good to be true. Its the one game I always wanted to see translated. and then another game comes along, a remake of a previously translated game, and you guys want to focus on that. sorry but…severe disappointment.

  22. @CloudHiro: There are people waiting for all of our projects to be complete. I cannot make everyone happy at once, and so I endeavor to keep everything moving forward as best I can. I would think that the ToDR progress to date would be something worth celebrating because it will be done that much more quickly when we get back to it rather than something to lament because it has fallen temporarily out of my mental spotlight. Plus, progress on it hasn’t even stopped. If you looked at the git feed you’d see there has been plenty of progress on ToDR since this post was made. You have no reason or right to be disappointed.

  23. Thank you very much , i can’t wait to play tales of phantasia X please release soon when done like vesperia.

  24. Many of us will wait as long as it takes for any of the current projects to be finished.

Many have waited for Tales of Vesperia to be translated, & our patients were awarded. So, we can wait until any one of these are done.

Tales Of Destiny DC (Director’s Cut)

    Tales Of Phantasia X

    Narikiri Dungeon X

We shall wait for when these things are done, just take your time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, as some say? Till then, continue to do your best.

  25. Hey there! How’s everything working?

Probably making some progress in any of the fields of any Tales Game one is working on translating.

So, it’s all good. Hope it turns out great. Keep up the good work!

  26. Hey, how’s things holding out?

Probably got a few more things done with them works.

Don’t know if it’s true or not, but keep up the good work!

  27. Hi! Things alright?

Asking cause I don’t know if anyone replies? But, eh, it’s almost end of April, maybe some news will hit soon?

Hope it’s some news updates about the progress of these translated script programs for the other Tales series?

Especially for Tales Of Destiny DC. Cause I gotta say, while some may have completed the game, the translation of what anyone says is a mystery?

    Good luck Absolute Zero& crew!
