Current Focus: Tales of Destiny R main story

Whoops, I’m a little late on this post. My goal was to complete act 2’s story translation in early June, but I ended up falling just short of finishing it off. That being said, it was still an incredibly productive month and I’m very happy with the progress that was made. For my part, I translated Deimos, Rodeon, and Helraios and I started poking at Mikheil. I got a little stalled on my progression because I’m still underleveled (and not that good at the game). Need to grind up a bit one of these days. In addition to the translation progress, Kajitani-Eizan was busy this month helping to squash bugs. He finally tracked down and eliminated a long-standing display bug that had a chance to trigger on treasure chests containing gald, food, or lens. We also identified a crash in a boss fight caused by an enemy having too many resistances. Our fix was to change the targeting menu in battle from listing the resistances in text (like Slash, Shot, Fire) to using the same icons that are used in both the Enemy Book in the menu and are displayed in the Arte descriptions. In my opinion, this change is a big improvement not just for internal consistency, but also for presentation.

So that you can manage expectations, I am not expecting July to be very productive for translation. June was a pretty busy month for me and I need some down time.

  3. I LOVE how the display looks now! It has a neatness that really can’t be had with strings of text.

    Also, great job finding a workaround. It’s one reason why I always say no translation can be exact. Because in what this came from, all elements were represented by single or short kanji strings so you could fit a lot more than with full English words. Sometimes compromises have to be made to fit the longer language into the same space.

    Happy to hear such great progress! Seems you almost clear the whole game storyline. Helraios is at least about 3/4 of the game story if I’m not mistaken?
    Is there a possibility that we can enjoy this game in all it’s glory in English this year..? 😀

  9. So, are you guys planning on changing the weaknesses and resistances from the words into the icons for every enemy and whatever else had them, or would that be too much work?

  13. Wow! This here’s amazing! Haven’t seen anything like this since…well since that video of Tales Of Destiny that was made by Absolute Zero with excellent translation & sub titles in the cutscenes.

    This story is coming very far, I’m hoping for more. But take some time, after all, it’s still Summer. And as the old saying goes; “All Work And No Play, Makes Someone A Dull Boy” or something like that.

    So good luck, & wishing for you & your team of helpers the best of luck. I’m praying that before the year is up, Tales Of Destiny R can be ready for Translation Download/Update on our game systems so we can play this out, be it PS2, or even for the PS3 or PS4.

    I am trying to make a Rogue Galaxy DVD9 Undub but it uses .mvi movie files and I would assume the dubbed audio is contained in them. So I don’t know how how I would go about extracting the audio to replace it with the Japanese dub. Could you point me in the right direction?

    (Also, why are there two Rutees in that screenshot? I haven’t played much of ToDR, so maybe there’s some kind of crazy item that allows you to play with multiple copies of the same character I don’t know about?)

  26. @ForceCube: This game has a set of items called Narikiri Dolls that turn the equipped character into the character of the doll. So by equipping a Rutee Doll on another character, I can have two of them. There’s no limit, so if you want a full party of one character, you can do it. In this case, the enemies in this dungeon were weak to water, so I was abusing my new game+ carry over items to attack that weakness. Normally you wouldn’t have the dolls at this point on a first playthrough.

    Keep up the great work, i’ve finished this game 7 or 8 times already, i knew this translations since phantasian productions announced the joint translation with AbsoluteZero. Every fan here won’t mind waiting a couple more years to finish this masterpiece in english. One more time
