Farewell for now, wireless

By • May 2, 2010

At this time, we believe that removing the wireless from the game is the best course of action.

I realize this may disappoint some of you, but the wireless is simply too broken to be enjoyable. Do understand that this decision is not yet 100% final. I am waiting for a second flashcart to arrive so that I can test the wireless more extensively. If there is anything that we can do to fix it, we will. However, for the time being, we feel that it is best to concentrate our efforts on the main game. While we understand that some of you wanted to make use of the wireless features, we cannot delay the release of the patch for a feature that has only niche interest. We feel that it is in everyone’s best interest to have the patch as soon as possible. If and when it becomes possible to fix the wireless, we will release an updated patch.

When I have completed my testing between two flashcarts, I can talk more about when the game breaks and why we think it breaks when using wireless mode. I apologize that I cannot provide more information at this time, but there are simply too many unknowns. We have ensured that the Versus style will be available in the single player mode, so don’t worry about that. In spite of what you might believe, removing the wireless will take less time and effort than either of the other two options. It is unfortunate that it had to come to this, but circumstances being what they are, we feel this decision is in the best interests of both the players and the team. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. Sad to see it go, but it’s for the best i suppose.

I’d only be playing single player anyhow =P
I cannot really think of anything else relevant to post, so i’ll leave with a thank you for taking up this project, God speed to you ^^ And I greatly look forward to it’s release~

  2. Just a random not entirely relevant question…

What flashcarts will you be testing the Wireless on once you get your second one?

  3. Is relevant the trend word or somethin?

  4. @Absolute
    That isn’t relevant.

  5. Thanks, we’ll be waiting for the patch to come. Thanks again for your hard work :)

  6. @Kamuki
You revealed its relevance. Punishment is in order.

  7. oh well, so it’s nearly decided to disable the wireless..that’s ok.

but IMO, it’s still the best that if you just Leave the wireless as-is and add extra warnings in-game.

some people (like me) will feel like “ah, i realy want to try that wireless thing even i know it would crash the game, im super curious about it..”

some people will felt satisfied after they “do” something they supposed not to be “done” lol

  8. for example :
it just like the “hot coffee minigames” in GTA san andreas.
when i know there is a minigame that got disabled, i realy want to play it, and when i got access to that minigame i felt realy satisfied

in this case, i would felt satisfied too when i tried that wifi thing eventhough i know it would crash my game . lol. well, that’s me lol

  9. So Happy_Tester is a pervert >.>

Anyway,The relevance of whether or not it’s relevant is irrelevant.

  10. Well I before I said I was in favour of leaving the wireless function in with the game, but I hadn’t thought you may come back to it at a later date when you have more knowledge or tools available. So in this case, I’m happy. Besides I just appreciate the game being translated to the tee. <3

  11. So from the first moment you can change styles you get access to the Versus style ?

I have to ask if you were playing the game normally when is the soonest you can gain the style (or when do you gain access to wi-fi in the game) ? So maybe enabling the versus style at that exact moment.

  12. In the Japanese verison, you could get the Versus style as soon as you have all characters. That is also the earliest time where you can get it in the translated version, but few players will get it that early. You’ll see when you play it.

  13. ¡Merece del todo la pena que os deshagáis de algo inservible y que además nos estropearía las maravillas del juego! Ya sólo nos queda esperar a que los últimos detalles estén listos y a disfrutar, gracias ! n_n

  14. Makes me wonder. Thoughhim, how many languages do you speak?

  15. when the repatch the original game after the new patch can we still use the same save file

  16. is the versus mode similar to star ocean 3′s? :S

  17. hmm… have you ever thought about the possibility, that someone else, who is not you or your team, might actually be able to figure it out some way or another, if you just keep this stuff in?

  18. well, thanks for including versus mode in the single player but still even till now, i don’t think i even tried playing multiplayer so it wasn’t a huge loss to me anyway.

But well, good luck to you guys and hope you guys managed to find a clue to this wireless issue.

  19. @fu: Something tells me that if they disable the Wireless Mode in the eventual v1.0 patch, and someone who’s supposedly capable of finding out what the problem is should actually pop up… I think they should be more than capable of re-enabling the Wireless Mode for themselves. If they’re not capable of even doing that by themselves… I wouldn’t put money on such a group being able to solve the puzzle of why the game apparently misbehaves while running in Wireless Mode.

@happy_tester: If you absolutely want to see the Wireless Mode, why not take the JP version for a spin? Unlike Hot Coffee, and similar “could have been” scenarios, the entire thing is there. Out-of-the-box! That way you’ll also get to see exactly what it “should” have been like. Then you can just close your eyes and let your imagination run wild with theories about what’s apparently wrong with the English version~ (In many cases, the truth and concrete facts are just disappointing.)

  20. Oh well. I am surprised that taking it out would result in a faster release. I wasn’t really going to care for it anyway.

I just want to play the single player really.

  21. @Karin
lol, but i’m legal enough too se that scene .lol

    @Carnivol
well, i’ve tried the wireless too ^^ jp version of course ^^

  22. wireless taken out? ehh I don’t play multiplayer.

  23. I’d rather see it kept in with a warning :/
But in the end it really wouldn’t matter because 1-2 hours of potential wireless play isn’t much to fuss over.

  24. i wonder if loading your save (from the patched one) to the JPN game will solve this wireless feat.

  25. That’s actually an interesting possibility tezen, but the question is would the save files be compatible? If you get the chance to try that once this is released and it works, post it up here. While I don’t really care whether or not the wireless is left in, personally, this might offer a new option to those who want it…

Actually come to think of it, even if the save files don’t match, I know of a program for converting PS1 games to the PSP that actually will allow you to change the save file to make it compatible. I wonder if one exists for the DS?

  26. If it comes to the question of play the game without multiplay vs. don’t play the game, there is simply no contest.
    Thank you.
I don’t think complaints are in order from anyone. You guys have done a hell of a lot of work and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say it is greatly appreciated.

  27. id like a release BEFORE school lets out so i have time to play it b4 summer work starts XD

also idk why im asking but is there any point in the game that requires or optionally uses the mike?

  28. just read somewhere that you can WFC using DeSmuME, although it’s really unstable. hope that could help you somehow :) here’s the link: http://www.ngemu.com/frontpage/?p=vB134329

  29. I agree with dawnbomb, seeing the game bofore school is out would be great. As this is my last summer after highschool I don’t wanna waste it all on a game. So playing the game before my last of all summer vacations starts would be nice…

  30. @ Deus:

this has been mentioned a few times; throughim’s reply was

@Player594: Unfortunately, ToI uses ad hoc wireless for its multiplayer and that doesn’t work in this build of DeSmuME. Thank you for the suggestion though.

  31. @dallionvistar
“If it comes to the question of play the game without multiplay vs. don’t play the game, there is simply no contest.”

    But thats not the question

The multiplayer is only unstable by itself. Singleplayer is completely stable with or without the multiplayer option.

  32. We don’t know that. Thoughhim said the game is nearly unplayable in WM, but he didn’t say singleplayer is totally stable. If it was the patch would be in your HDs right now. The thing is, aside from the WM thing, we are completely in the dark about the beta testing results.

  33. If the single player were perfect, we would have released already. The bugs aren’t a huge deal, but it isn’t ready for release. Beta testing has two states – done and not done. It is currently not done. I still haven’t been able to do more wireless testing, so I have no new info to provide.

  34. if the wm cant be fixed dont beat your self over the head about it just make sure single player is working good i mena how many people actually know what a tales game is who are able to play locally much less care about playing one over wireless if it was world wide wifi then i would try to get it working but since it is just local dont sweat it

  35. it’s a pity the wireless system can’t be used, but I’m already sooooo happy for translating the main game :D
I have been waiting since the very beginning and now that it’s almost ready it’s even more exciting XD

thank you all so much for this!
    greetzz!!

  36. I’ve been accompanying this project since 2008 and I have seen how serious and determined you guys are to finish it.
I know you guys heard a lot about this but, thank you in name of all us gamers to make this come true!

  37. god, some people here have to be aspies, looking at the way they seem to cling to every words dictionary explanation

does WM, in any way or form, affect single player mode in its stability, meaning, by removing WM, will there be just a single bug less in singleplayer?

  38. I think both this and the previous post make it clear WM is being taken out because it’s almost impossible to play in it, due to random crashes that prevent you to progress in the game or even save. I don’t think it affects single player at all since you don’t need to activate WM to play solo.

  39. no problem guys, you’ve done well
you’ve just reached your limit, and maybe eventually you’ll break past it :D

  40. By “wireless”, you mean multiplayer, right? Damn, that was what I was most looking forward to! Oh, well. Maybe you will be able to fix it eventually.

  41. @Kokia
we are completely in the dark about the beta testing results because the tester hasn’t beat the patched game yet .lol

  42. ^ And how do you know that? There are tsterS and the fact that the patch hasn’t been released doesn’t imply in any way none of them beat the game yet. Not all bugs/crashes appear in a single playthrough.

  43. ^
actualy i’ve been a beta tester for a game too, and ofcourse as a tester we must beat the game first and told to the “developer” if there any bugs or not. and mustn’t tell anyone beside the “project member only” :D well, some of them doesnt have to beat a game, but they had a task too lol

if there is no bugs again, or 99% complete then the developer could realese it and happy end :D

  44. I don’t think that would cause me any harm as long as the single player mode will be full functional =D

do your best guys, our hearts are with you!

  45. I didn’t know the game had a wireless feature. If you can’t fix it, disable it. Many players won’t use wireless feature like myself. I don’t have wireless at home and only can use in public places and in a hotel (once a month for a week).

I’m sure you’ll fix and update the patch in the future.

  46. @ Linkz1: It’s not online wireless, it’s local, ie DS directly to DS, so you just need a friend with a DS and a copy of the game. But yes, it seems most people aren’t bothered about the multiplayer at all.

  47. @dallionvistar
I assume you never play this game. there is no multiplay vs, Wireless play is use for cooperative play.
the ” versus ” thing that people talking about is the Versus fighting style/stance, we normally get it from playing wireless cooperative.

  48. Hmm I am wondering something about the multiplayer. You said it mostly crashed with the story moving forward. Would it be possible to just do a menu translation so people who know the story could play it with their friends, or does the game still crash with just the menu translated?

  49. Maybe you’re right, I think the fewer parts they translate the fewer the bugs. But most of us here are waiting for the full translation so they can play the game and understand the story of the game.

  50. I know most people are waiting for the full game, but I was just thinking maybe it could be a quick fix for multiplayer after the full game is released. I am not asking for a delay or incomplete version. I was just thinking there could be a full menu translated version used for multiplayer after the main translation is released.
